DETROIT (WWJ) - A man working as a contractor with DTE Energy was killed on Saturday afternoon after officials said he came into contact with live equipment in Detroit.

A spokesperson for the Detroit-based energy company confirmed the fatality to WXYZ, stating the incident occurred near Fort Street and W Outer Drive sometime in the afternoon hours.

DTE said the man's employer is working to notify his family. The man's identity was not released.

The following statement was issued on behalf of the company:

“It is with heavy hearts that we confirm that one of our contract partners lost an employee today while doing work for DTE. This contract line worker who was working in Detroit came in contact with live equipment and was fatally wounded. His employer is in the process of informing his family and colleagues, and is asking for time and respect to make those notifications. We send our love and support to his family and loved ones.“

The circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remain unclear. Officials with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is expected to conduct an investigation.

The latest MIOSHA-related death comes days after a 53-year-old laborer was killed after falling 18 feet onto concrete while performing fire-proofing activities to structural steel.

A MIOSHA investigation found the worker was wearing fall protection, but was not physically tied-off to an anchorage point.

So far, 16 people have died on the job in Michigan this year. There were 43 MIOSHA-related deaths in 2022.
