(WWJ) Eastpointe Community Schools is dealing with a staffing shortage so severe that some children in the district have been told to stay home.
Parents and guardians of students at the Middle School were informed over the weekend that their kids would have to revert to remote learning for the time being... because there are simply not enough teachers.
"What has happened at the middle school as that we've had a couple of staff members resign with no notice," district spokesperson Kaitlynn Kenitz told WWJ Newsradio 950. "And teachers are leaving the profession or leaving to pursue opportunities in other school district."
Kenitz said the staffing shortage is being addressed, and that at-home learning for 6th and 7th graders is expected to continue for about week.
"We are hoping to be back to in-person learning on Monday (Sept. 27)," she said. "We have our human resources department working very hard to try to find more people and get them through the hiring process."
Kenitz said if there are any retired teachers who want to get back into the field, or potential candidates who have degrees but need a teaching certification, there measures in place to help people get certified.
"Teaching is challenging," Kenitz added. "I think COVID had just made so many things that were previously an issue just a munch bigger problem; it's just magnified existing issues. It's been a really difficult year in teaching."
