(WWJ) — An elderly Northern Michigan man is in critical condition after being hit by a dirt bike over the weekend, an incident witnessed by Michigan State Police troopers.

It happened around 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, according to MSP officials.

Troopers with the Alpena post were on County Road 451 in Presque Isle County when an 87-year-old Rogers City man walked across the road with a flashlight to his mailbox.

When the man got to the mailbox on the east side of the road, a juvenile riding a motorized dirt bike without a headlight was headed north on the same side of the road and collided with the elderly man, according to MSP.

The man was airlifted to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.

The driver of the dirt bike did not sustain any injuries. MSP officials did not disclose the juvenile driver’s age and it was not clear whether they were wearing a helmet.

Officials did not say whether the juvenile may face charges in connection with the crash.

Alpena Post troopers were assisted by MSP Gaylord Post troopers, the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office, Rogers City Police Department, Rogers City Ambulance, and Rogers City Area First Responders.
