STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) — A 78-year-old woman has died after her SUV was hit by a semi-truck Tuesday afternoon in Sterling Heights.
The crash happened shortly before 1 p.m., according to a report from Fox 2, in the area of 17 Mile and Mound Roads.
The elderly woman was reportedly driving a Toyota Highlander east on 17 Mile when she ran a red light at the intersection with Mound. A northbound semi-truck slammed into the woman's SUV, according to the report.
The woman's SUV sustained heavy front-end damage and debris was scattered all over the road.
The intersection was closed for about four hours as police investigated. It reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Authorities have not said whether drugs or alcohol or distracted driving may have played a role in the crash.
It was not immediately clear whether the semi driver was injured.
