HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) -- Free water filters are being distributed to residents in Hamtramck following the discovery of elevated lead levels in the city’s water.
The city recently tested water samples taken from more than 40 homes, and six were found to be above the action level for lead.

On Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents can collect the filters in the parking lot of the Hamtramck Town Center on Joseph Campau.
City officials are urging residents without a lead service line to run their water for 30 seconds to two minutes to flush the lead out.
Those who do have a lead service line should run it for three to five minutes.
The news comes two weeks after high levels of lead were discovered in the water in Benton Harbor.
Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist announced on October 14 the state would send 20 semi-truckloads of water to the west Michigan city each Monday until the water is safe.
