(WWJ) – Cats and dogs have been spending more time in animal shelters this year due to the pandemic, and the Bissell Pet Foundation is giving people the chance to change that this holiday season.
Efforts to find pets their “forever homes” are underway this month with the foundation’s Empty the Shelters - Holiday Hope event, which runs through Dec. 20.
Pet adoption fees have been reduced to $25 or less per dog or cat through the end of the event. Pets who are adopted during the event will be spayed and neutered, have all their shots and be microchipped.
There are more than 200 shelters in 40 states participating in this year’s event, including more than 40 locations in Michigan, which can be found on the Bissell Pet Foundation website.
The foundation’s Brittany Schlacter tells WWJ the need is great for pets in shelters this holiday season.
“This year was a very tough time for shelters across the country. We are hearing from shelters everywhere that they’re crowded and pets just aren’t getting adopted at the same rate that they normally are, so pets are staying in shelters longer," she said.
Schlacter says people shouldn’t adopt a cat or dog unless you're ready to make that commitment.
More information on the event can be found on Bissell’s website.
