(WWJ) --Detroit Police are putting out a warning ahead of potential flooding from heavy rains, with severe weather in the forecast on Wednesday.
Officials said that 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. A foot of of rushing water is enough to carry away most cars, while two feet can carry away SUVs and trucks.
Drivers are advised not to drive through standing water, as it can wreck the transmission, weaken the brakes and warp rotors.
After a warm, cloudy and breezy start on Wednesday, with temps hitting the low 70s, AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said WWJ's listening area is at the northern fringe of a severe weather event.
"Today's surge to near 70 degrees or better is going to come with a price," said DeVore.
He said rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon are expected to continue into the night, noting that these storms could bring "damaging wind gusts" to some spots.
AccuWeather reports that the wind gusts will get around 30 mph in the afternoon, and dip down into the 20s during the night.
As far as the temperature goes, Metro Detroit will reach up into the low 70s and drop down to the high 40s after some downpours.
Thursday will be a bit tamer, DeVore said, with some windy conditions and cooler temperatures in the upper 50s. Showers will return in the evening, passing through the night and into Friday morning.
