SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- A majority of schools across Metro Detroit are closed for the next couple of days, due to the extreme cold.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory, now in effect through noon on Wednesday, Jan. 22, for all of Southeast Michigan.

Forecasters are warning it will be dangerously cold outside in Metro Detroit, with temperatures falling into the single digital, and of wind chills as low as -15 in Metro Detroit.

All public school districts in Metro Detroit are closed Tuesday and Wednesday — with the exception of Detroit Public Schools and Harper Woods City Schools who said they would be closed on Tuesday. (Stay with WWJ for updates).

The NWS is advising Metro Detroiters to keep pets indoors as much as possible during this time, and use caution while traveling outside.

Wear appropriate clothing -- including a coat, hat, and gloves.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly, and do not use generators inside.

Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950 Tuesday morning, AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said don't let the sunshine out there fool you.

"It can be very deceptive," Lundberg said. "You go look outside and say, 'Wow! It's not so bad outside. Then you take one step outside and it hits you in the face."

With temperatures in the single digits, coupled with a steady breeze, Lundberg said it'll feel more like -10 to -15 degrees below zero during the day on Tuesday.

Lundberg said Tuesday would be even colder than Monday, with some snow showers and flurries blowing through, and a high getting up to around 10 degrees.

While the snow isn't expected accumulate very much, it will be enough to stick to the road and make things slippery -- so drive with caution. "Be prepared for some icy spots around the region as a result of these flurries or snow showers that come on through," Lundberg said.

Overnight, the temp will drop down to a frigid -5, according to forecasters.

AccuWeather is calling for another very cold day Wednesday, with high of 18 degrees — still well below average for this date in our area.

Some good news: Forecasters say temperatures will bounce back a little bit Thursday and Friday, with a high of around 28 degrees on Thursday and 23 on Friday. It'll warm up a bit more on Saturday, with a forecasted high of around 30 degrees to start the weekend.

Meanwhile, the City of Detroit says several crews working hard to repair water mains, removing ice off streets and salting where needed. The Detroit Department of Water and Sewerage says whenever there is a drastic change in temperature, frigid cold or heat wave, it can put extra tension on the pipes and cause breaks.

"We have our workers making sure they cover their faces as much as possible in this frigid weather, in addition to wearing protective, boots, layered clothing, gloves, and hard hats and take breaks inside running vehicles to get warm," DWSD said, in a statement. "Our priority is repairing water mains while keeping our staff safe so they go home to their families in the same condition they came to work this morning."

The DWSD wants to remind the public never to drive or walk through standing water or iced over streets. In Detroit, water main breaks can be reported by phone at 313-267-8000.

Those who are looking for a safe place to go can take shelter at many warming centers across Metro Detroit, opening for those who need them. Get the details HERE.

The Michigan Humane Society has a resources available for pet owners when dealing with cold temperatures. The Humane Society of the United States recommends contacting local law enforcement if pets are left outside without adequate shelter from the cold. In some areas, it is a crime to leave animals outside when temperatures dip to a certain point.
