TROY (WWJ) -- Fieger Law announced that they have been retained by the parents of a 5-year-old boy killed in a hyperbaric chamber explosion in Troy.

The explosion happened Friday morning at the Oxford Medical Center on Kirts Boulevard. The boy’s mother, who was standing next to the chamber, was injured in the explosion.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy, and our hearts are with the family as they navigate this immeasurable loss,” James Harrington, Managing Partner of Fieger Law, said. “We ask that the public and media respect the family’s privacy at this time.  We are investigating every aspect of this matter and will report our findings in due time. The safety of children should always be the top priority, and this incident raises serious concerns about hyperbaric chambers and the oversight and regulation of hyperbaric treatments.”

The mother is also being represented by the law firm.

According to a GoFundMe set up to raise money for the boy's family, he loved running, swimming and playing Minecraft and other video games.

"He was the smartest and cutest kid that liked to zoom, zoom, zoom. He asked to see pictures of germs, liked to know how things worked, he liked to make field journals and he had finally started adding facial features to his people drawings," according to a message on the fundraiser page.

"He was planning to try mountain BMX racing and karate in the summer," the post continued. "...His favorite thing to do is 'super sonic mode.' Run as fast as humanly possibly. He had nature school last year and ran, jumped and rolled down hills. He loved mud. Loved to stomp on ice. Loved his mama and daddy so much." [Read more here].

Authorities are still investigating what caused the explosion.

Hyperbaric chambers contain 100% oxygen, which The Oxford Medical Center says can be used to treat a number of conditions, from cancer to long COVID to autism. Such treatments are not approved by the FDA for treatment of autism spectrum disorder.

It’s unknown at this time what the boy was being treated for.

A former director was charged and arraigned on multiple counts by the Attorney General for allegedly falsifying therapist credentials, witness intimidation and identity theft. 38-year-old Kimberly Casey Coden, of Huntington Woods, was sentenced to prison time in December 2024.
