DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police have arrested the father of an 11-year-old boy who was shot in the face on Wednesday at a home on the city's west side.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said the father and mother weren't home when a child in the home found and picked up the gun, and the boy was shot.
A neighbor heard the gunfire, on Artesian Street in the area of Tireman and the Southfield Freeway, called 911.
Police responded and the boy was rushed to the hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.
Bettison said two other kids were in the home, ages 4 and 8. It's still unclear which one pulled the trigger.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will decide on what charges to file against the dad, whose name was not immediately released.
Under Michigan's safe storage law (Public Act 17 of 2023 / MCL 28.429), gun owners must keep unattended firearms unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked container whenever it's known that a minor under 18 is, or is likely to be, present.
Free gun locks are available to city residents at all Detroit Police Department Precincts, with no questions asked. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) provides an interactive MDHHS Gun Lock Distribution Map showing over 150 partner sites statewide where free cable gun locks are available.
