DETROIT (WWJ) -- Federal and local law enforcement have descended on a west side Detroit neighborhood were human skeletal remains were discovered over the weekend.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Tim Pamplin reports the FBI is taking the lead on this investigation, with about 20 agents on the scene in the neighborhood, off I-96 near Tireman, on Monday.
"They got a backhoe, shovels, metal detectors, and I can see them now sifting soil looking for any clues and any more remains," Pamplin reported.
Neighbors told Pamplin a construction crew was working on fixing up a house here on Oregon Street at Beechwood Sunday afternoon when their excavator dug up the human remains on the neighboring vacant lot.
The workers called Detroit police who in turn called the FBI.
Tiara Owens, who lives directly opposite the dig site, said police responded to the scene late Sunday afternoon.
"The remains were found yesterday afternoon between 4 and 5 o'clock, to my knowledge. A human's head, some type of skull was found," Owen said. "It is pretty disturbing."
Owens told Pamplin she's lived on this block since the mid-60s, and the home that once stood on the vacant lot was demolished about 10 years ago.
The FBI spokesman would not release any details about the ongoing investigation, only saying that the FBI was "conducting law enforcement activities" at that location.
The spokesman added that there is not believed to be any threat to the public at this time.
