
DETROIT (WWJ) - A single vehicle crash left one person dead after police say they struck a utility pole and caught fire on Belle Isle.
The crash occurred at 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday, according to authorities.
The vehicle was on fire when Michigan State Police troopers arrived, according to a Tweet from the MSP Second District. The Detroit Fire Department put out the fire.
While firefighters were putting out the fire, troopers searched for the driver but were unable to locate them.
Once the fire was out, troopers found one person sitting in the driver’s seat.
Authorities said they were able to find the registered owner of the vehicle. The owner said they loaned the vehicle to a friend to run errands.
MSP troopers spoke to the family of the woman that was lent the vehicle. The family was able to verify that the woman was loaned the vehicle by the owner, according to the Tweet.
Authorities said they are waiting for the results of the autopsy to confirm the identity of the driver and the cause of the crash.
