DETROIT (WWJ) – When a street artist paints a mural, or really any other public display, they don’t really have any control over what happens next. It could even be covered up, and that’s exactly what’s happened with the famous whale mural in Detroit.

Since 1997, the Broderick Tower in downtown Detroit – highly visible just beyond the Comerica Park outfield – has displayed a massive whale mural, painted by world famous artist and Michigan native Wyland.

The mural is currently covered by another piece of art – which is also an ad for Rocket Mortgage – done by local artist Phil Simpson. In today’s edition of The Daily J podcast, WWJ’s Zach Clark digs into what is the value of public art in Detroit and why Wyland has taken his case to the Supreme Court of Michigan.
