Hamtramck (WWJ) -- A special film series begins this weekend in Hamtramck and it's focused on the lives of women living in Afghanistan.

The Afghan Women's Film Festival, put on by Oakland University's Film Studies and Production program, will show three films directed by Afghan women. The festival will take place on every Sunday beginning this Sunday, Nov. 7 through Nov. 21.

"The Afghan Women's Film Festival comes at an important time - as women in the country lose their freedoms following the pull-out of U.S.
troops, said Bridget Kies, Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Oakland.

Kies said it's "heartbreaking" to watch the Taliban take back control and "slowly chip away" at the rights women had before their takeover -- like the right to get an education or to even make films.

The first film, "A Thousand Girls Like Me," will show at 5 p.m. this Sunday. Admission to this film is free, but pre-registration is required.

The first two films will be playing at The Film Lab in Hamtramck at 3105 Holbrook Ave. The closing film will be playing at Cinema Detroit in Detroit at 4126 3rd Ave. and will be the only showing that isn't free -- it will cost you $12, with $1 from each ticket going towards Freedom House Detroit.

pre-registration is required, plan your viewing HERE.
