(WWJ) Smoke could be seen for miles as a result of a fire in a scrapyard in Southwest Detroit.
Firefighters were called to Ferrous Processing and Trading Company on Lonyo near Dix around 3 a.m. Wednesday as flames and smoke billowed from the yard, which is in a heavy industrial area of the city.
In a statement, the Garden City Police Department said Strong there was a strong burning plastic odor due to the fire, and that emergency crews are aware.
Police said there was no immediate danger to residents.
No injuries have been reported.
It's unclear how the fire started, but one worker told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton that some peddlers are negligent.
"It's negligence on the peddlers that bring in materials that shouldn't belong like batteries, gas, all sorts of things that they sneak in that you can't catch," the worker said.
Langton said cranes were on the scene moving the metal and other materials so firefighters could pour water on it.
Their website says Ferrous Processing & Trading has grown into one of North America’s premier processors, sellers and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds. From massive auto shredding operations and specialty steel making and foundry products to nonferrous metals and industrial scrap management.
