DETROIT (WWJ) - A fire fighter working flames on a burning house in northwest Detroit issued a mayday call early Wednesday morning after the floor he was standing collapsed beneath him.
Chief James Harris of the Detroit Fire Department told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the mayday call — a distress call made over radio to signal a life-threatening emergency — was sent out by the firefighter in danger around 5 a.m. from the location of a house fire on Curtis Street that crews from Engine 30 were working to extinguish.
According to Harris, the firefighter fell through the floor into the basement of the home; additional firefighters were called to the scene to assist after they received the mayday call.
Harris said the firefighter was able to escape the basement by using the stairs, which were still stable.
Harris said it was "fortunate" and "a blessing" that there were no injuries.
