Firefighters rescue residents from burning apartment building in Southwest Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A fire that broke out at an apartment complex in Southwest Detroit Monday morning had people jumping out of windows to escape.


The Detroit Fire Department said the first calls came in around 8 a.m., with witnesses reporting a fire with people possibly trapped inside at the Galston Apartments, on Cicotte Street, near Michigan Ave.

Firefighters got to the scene to find smoke, flames and people at windows of the complex. Firefighters rescued multiple residents using ladders, the DFD said.

One man jumped out of a third story window and hurt his leg, officials said.

Another man was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

In total, officials said 28 units were destroyed.

DDOT brought buses to keep evacuated residents get out of the sun, and the building's owner is working to relocate residents.

The City of Detroit and the Red Cross will anyone the owner is unable to rehouse.
