EAST LANSING (WWJ) Two separate shootings near Michigan State University left five people injured in the hours after Halloween, police said.

“We are aware that this situation is very frightening for our bystanders, for our Michigan State University students and for their families,” East Lansing Police Chief Jen Brown said in a press conference. “…On one of our busiest nights, the East Lansing Police Department officers provided life-saving aid to gunshot victims, secured multiple crime scenes and removed impaired drivers from our streets.”

East Lansing Police said the first shooting took place just after midnight on Sunday, November 1, at M.A.C. and Linden. According to authorities, three victims sustained gunshot wounds. Two are in stable condition. The third person’s condition is unknown.

Police said the second shooting happened “in the early morning hours” near Stoddard and Frye. Two victims are hospitalized in stable condition.

“Multiple guns were recovered from the scene,” Brown said. “It’s not yet been determined if these were the weapons used in the shooting. Several individuals were taken into custody.”

Brown emphasized there is no threat to the public.

Both crime scenes are about a quarter mile north of campus.

Police have not released any further details about the circumstances leading up to the shootings, or if any MSU students were involved.

Officers also responded overnight to two pedestrian crashes near the university. The first took place on Abbot near Library Lane. According to authorities, the driver remained at the scene.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition originally, but has been upgraded to stable condition following surgery.

Authorities said the second crash occurred at Grand River and Gunson. Officers recovered a firearm from the vehicle. The victim is in stable condition.

In both crashes, officers arrested the drivers for Operating While Intoxicated.

Police said East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 incidents in the past 24 hours, 75 of them taking place overnight.

“Each crime scene was still being worked when the next incident began,” Brown said.

Michigan State Police, Meridian Twp. Police, Lansing Police, Ingham County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety all assisted in in the investigations.

The Lansing Twp. Fire Department, Meridian Twp. Fire Department, Mobile Medical Response and Clinton Area Ambulance Service all assisted East Lansing firefighters.

The East Lansing Police Department said they will release more information as it becomes available.
