FLINT (WWJ) - A couple of explosive devices hidden in a car door made for a hair-raising experience for one Flint resident after he made the discovery over the weekend.
According to Flint Police Chief Terence Green, the Flint man stumbled across the C4 explosives as he was installing a car door at his home on the city's north side on Saturday.
"Indeed this is military grade C4 explosives they are very dangerous and hazardous," said Green via ABC 12.
Police said the door was purchased by the man, who was not identified by police, at the salvage yard in Capac about 40 miles from Flint.
The Flint Police Department's bob squad was dispatched to the home after the man contacted authorities. The explosive devices were taken into custody while police investigate the incident.
"The bomb squad did safely remove these items. Right now they are secured in a secure location," Green said.
According to Green, investigators on the case do believe the C4 devices were possibly stolen from a military base and concealed within the door.
"You see the lot numbers on there. We are going to have the ATF track those lot numbers so we will have a better idea of determining where they actually came from," Green said.
Green went on to say that things could have turned out different had the man not discovered the explosives and they detonated.
"Due to the fact that these explosives were concealed in the door of the vehicle, if there was some type of motor vehicle accident and a collision with that vehicle, I believe these explosives would have ignited and caused a lot of damage, loss of life and things of that nature," Green added.
According to Michigan law, it is illegal for civilians to possess or transport explosive devices. Green said it is a 15-year felony due to the dangerous nature of the explosives to civilians who are not trained to handle them.
Green advised anyone who encounters explosive devices to immediately call 911 and refrain from handling or detonating the explosives.
