DETROIT (WWJ) -- Ford has issued a recall for an estimated 200,000 vehicles across the United States over an issue that may prevent the brake lights from turning off.
Cars covered in the recall include certain 2014 and 2015 Lincoln MKZ and Ford Fusion midsize vehicles, and some 2015 Mustangs.
The problem occurs when high temperatures and humidity cause a rubber brake pedal part to disintegrate. When that happens, brake lights stay turned on, which can cause confusion among other drivers and lead to accidents.
Additionally, the issue can also cause those with automatic transmissions to shift out of "park" without having their foot on the brake.
The vehicles involved in the recall were all sold or registered in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
Car owners will be notified of the recall via mail beginning on March 3, and can take their vehicles to the dealership to have brake and clutch pedal bumpers replaced.
Ford has not reported any crashes or injuries related to the issue.
