(WWJ) - Longtime Detroit sports anchor Don Shane passed away at the age of 70, family and friends announced on Saturday morning.
Shane spent over two decades as a Channel 7 sportscaster at WXYZ, covering local teams for 23 years before retiring in Feb. 2012.
According to WXYZ, Shane began working at the station in 1989.
"[He] was on hand for so many hugely important events over the years. The many championships – but also the heart-breaking defeats – all while showcasing the drama and emotion of the moment for our viewers," the station said. "The NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup, the Rose Bowl, prize fights from Las Vegas – Don covered it all during a career that included two stints in Detroit."
Shane moved to Arizona after he retired before spending the last few years in California to be close to his children. WXYZ said Shane welcomed his first grandchild in May 2022.
Channel 7 noted that Shane will always be remembered for his professionalism, big personality and hard work ethic.
"We’ll miss you, Don. Our thoughts are with his entire family at this difficult time," the station said.
