DETROIT (WWJ) - A bad traffic crash which prompted multiple freeway closures Tuesday morning is causing headaches for commuters in downtown Detroit after authorities say a vehicle drove off an overpass and fell onto the I-75/375 entrance ramp.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene on Brush Street where an investigation was still underway after authorities were first dispatched to the scene around 3 a.m.
"It appears the vehicle was driving eastbound on the Fisher Freeway Service Drive when it crashed through what they called parapet, which is the barrier on Brush Street, that would prevent the cars from going on the highway," Langton said. "Well this time, it didn't happen."
Langton reported that the vehicle continued through the barrier, fell roughly 16 feet off the overpass and crash landed on the I-75/375 entrance ramp.
Michigan State Police, Detroit police, Michigan Department of Transportation and Wayne County officials are all on scene continuing to look into what caused the crash.
"It looks like there was a fuel spill, that's apparently cleaned up. The vehicle has been towed away, but the investigation continues as well as multiple freeways closed," Langton added.
It is currently unknown how many people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The condition of the driver and possible other occupants were not released.
WWJ traffic reporter KT said the I-75, the Fisher Freeway is closed at Gratiot and I-375. Although drivers can get on to Gratiot, that route is becoming very backed up.
"With being forced off at Gratiot, you can go north to Russel Street to Mack, back to I-75," KT reported. "If you're on the way there, you can take the Lodge Freeway northbound to I-94 eastbound, back on to I-75 again."
