(WWJ) – Thousands of Metro Detroiters are still without power Sunday morning after the latest round of winter weather hit the area on Friday night.
Around 40,000 DTE Energy customers were offline as of 5:30 p.m., according to the DTE Outage Center.
DTE President Trevor Lauer estimates DTE will have service restored to 95% of those who lost power this weekend by Tuesday.
Lauer told WWJ many of the customers impacted by Friday's storm also lost power in the late-February ice storm that knocked out power to more than half a million. Thousands of Metro Detroiters have been without power for more days than they've had it since the ice storm hit, a frustrating situation for many.
Michigan Public Service Commission Chair Dan Scripps told WWJ Sunday morning the commission will be looking into how DTE has handled the recent storms and what could possibly be done to keep it from happening again.
"The most frustrating thing, maybe even for us, is that this isn't a new issue. That we have not had the system or the levels of reliability on the system that customers expect and deserve," Scripps said.
While there have been efforts to improve the power system across Southeast Michigan – and Scripps says there have been some improvements – the events of the last two weeks "really underscore how much more work there is to do."
DTE says there are about 3,500 crews in the field working to restore service on Sunday.
