DEARBORN (WWJ) Michigan residents are feeling the pinch at the pump as the average gas price jumps to its highest level in nearly four years.
AAA Michigan reports that gas prices statewide has skyrocketed 85 cents from a week ago, now at their highest since July 2022. The prices are also $1.65 higher than early May of 2025, and $1 higher than April 2026.
“…Until oil prices ease and gasoline stocks rebuild, drivers may continue to feel pressure from higher prices at the pump,” said Adrienne Woodland, AAA spokesperson, in a press release.
The statewide average now stands at $4.87 per gallon, meaning that Michigan drivers pay about $73 to fill up a 15-gallon tank ($22 more than in April of last year).
However, Metro Detroit’s gas prices are among the lowest in the state at $4.83 per gallon. Only Flint ($4.82) and Marquette ($4.65) come in lower.
Benton Harbor, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids boast the highest average gas prices in Michigan at just shy of $5 per gallon.
According to AAA, the rise in gas prices comes as both gasoline supply and production decrease while demand increases.
