Genesee County jail evacuates inmates due to electrical fire

FLINT (WWJ) -- A small electrical fire that started in the walls at the Genesee County Jail last night led to an evacuation of all inmates.

Around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the Flint Fire Department responded to a call at the jail, located at 1002 Saginaw Street, where they were able to quickly contain the fire.

While speaking on Facebook Live, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said that no one was injured.

"We have what we believe was a fire that was in the vent that came from the dryer," Sheriff Swanson told reporters. "We don't know what was the primary source, but we're doing the investigation."

In response to the fire, all 630 inmates were briefly evacuated from the jail, but were returned to their cells once the situation was under control.
