NEW YORK (WWJ) GM is about to move into Artificial Intelligence in a big way.

The first thing drivers will see is a more conversational interface in vehicles.   The new system will allow drivers to use the Google Gemini systems to converse naturally with vehicles.  The system will work in connection with GM’s Onstar.  GM says it will be tuned to your personal preferences and essentially allow your car to become your digital assistant.

The next step is a big upgrade of GM’s hands free Super Cruise system.  Starting in 2028, GM will roll out a version that allows drivers to take their eyes off the road, and do other things, while the system does the driving.

GM didn’t give specifics about when the “eyes off” driving will occur.  But, the company did say it will debut in 2028, on Cadillac’s electric Escalade IQ.

This is part of a new computer system that will debut on that same vehicle.  GM says it will help advance how vehicles are developed, and allow more seamless software upgrades.

This comes as carmakers are moving more to use software to differentiate their vehicles.   There’s been much discussion industrywide of “Software Defined Vehicles.”  The GM computing system announced today is the first announcement of systems that are being worked on by all carmakers.

The announcements came today at a special GM Forward event in New York, where the company outlined a number of its future technologies.
