WARREN (WWJ) -- The story of 13-year-old Dillon Reeves, who leapt into action to stop a runaway school bus last month has made headlines across the country... but what became of the driver?
Officials say the unnamed woman who lost consciousness behind the wheel of a bus full of junior high kids is expected to make a recovery following the harrowing incident in Warren on April 26.
However, she's unable to return to work for awhile and could use some help.
In an update shared via GoFundMe last week, a friend says the driver for Warren Consolidated Schools is back home recovering from what doctors believe may have been a seizure. "Her drug and alcohol screenings came back negative (as we knew they would). All CT and MRI scans came back clean -- which is great news," wrote Candy Barr, who said the driver wants to stay anonymous to protect her privacy.
"They still have no definitive reason for why this emergency occurred, and not knowing the why is a little scary for her. She misses driving her bus and seeing her kids everyday."
Under Michigan law, the bus driver will not be allowed operate a vehicle for a minimum of six months, so there's an online fundraiser underway to help her pay the bills.
Barr said, "She is a dedicated school bus driver who gets up each day to get our children to and from school. She also works extra time taking students to field trips and school sporting events. She cares for each of the students on her bus as if they were her own. In addition to the care she shows her students, she is also a devoted mom of three young children, ages 8, 7, and 4."
Barr said the driver will receive only 60% of her pay until June 15, when her income will be reduced to $0.
Any money raised will be used to cover medical bills, mortgage, and living expenses, and help bridge the gap between her lost income until she can get back behind the wheel, Barr said. "Please help us, help her and her family through this unexpected situation."
