WARREN (WWJ) – Two weeks ago 13-year-old Dillon Reeves was hailed a hero after bringing a bus full of his Carter Middle School classmates to a safe stop when their bus driver lost consciousness due to a medical emergency.
On Thursday he received more praise, honored with an official "key to the city" from Warren Mayor Jim Fouts, a t-shirt labeling him a "superhero," and a special treat for his family.
"He stands as a symbol of what we hope all people will be, and I think you're gonna be an inspiration for all young people, and maybe old people as well, like me," Fouts said during Thursday's ceremony. "When you do the right thing, a lot of good things come to you, and as a result of that, congratulations. The future is yours."
Reeves will also be appointed Warren Police Commissioner for a day on a date to be determined. He and his family will also be treated to a limo ride, dinner and dessert from Warren's Andiamo Italia.
Reeves was on his way home from school on April 26 when the driver passed out. Surveillance video released by Warren Consolidated School shows the 13-year-old coolly rushing to the front of the bus and stepping on the brakes.
"Someone call 911… now! Someone call 911," he said to his classmates, who had begun to scream. "I don't care! Someone call 911!"
The clip went viral, receiving national attention.
Also on Thursday Fouts presented Reeves with a t-shirt that has the teen's face on Superman in front of a school bus. The shirt reads "Superhero. Dillon Reeves. Saving Lives All In A Day's Work."
Officials have not released any information about what caused the bus driver to lose consciousness, but said two weeks ago she was expected to make a recovery.
