BRANDON TWP. (WWJ) -- Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution on the ice this winter, after a dog fell into a pond in northern Oakland County.

There were some scary moments, but everyone is OK following the incident Tuesday in the area of Oakwood and Hadley roads in Brandon Twp.

According to Brandon Twp Fire Department Captain Billy Starr, a Goldendoodle was ran out onto ice that was about an inch thick at the edge of the pond. However, the middle of the pond wasn't frozen, and the dog plunged into the water.

The dog's owner called for help and firefighters put on equipment to go in safely to rescue the dog, which reportedly weighed around 60 lbs. and was hanging onto a piece of ice.

The dog was safely recovered, was reunited with its owner, and is doing OK, Starr said.

With this incident in mind, the Fire Department is reminding people not to venture onto potentially dangerous ice to rescue pets, but to instead call for help like this owner did.

Starr said a well-intentioned person may create a bigger problem if they go in, too.
