DETROIT (WWJ) -- A major construction project in Detroit is causing some freeway congestion.

Part of the stretch of I-75 known as the Fisher Freeway will be closed until 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Closures will affect the two left lanes of southbound I-75 from just north of the I-96 interchange to Lansing Street, which is just south of Clark Street in Southwest Detroit.

The lanes have been closed while the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority works on the approach to the future Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Communications Director Mark Butler says the same two-lane closure, which totals just under 19 miles of I-75 South, will also occur tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Butler says work on the bridge is on-schedule, despite some COVID-related delays to construction.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is still projected to open in late 2024, when cars and trucks — as well as bikes and pedestrians — will be allowed to cross between Detroit and Windsor.
