DETROIT (WWJ) -- Gas prices were down across the nation to start Thanksgiving week, but experts say they're not expected to stay that way.
AAA estimates close to 80 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.
So, when is the best time to fill up your tank?
"I would absolutely do it right now," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at Gas Buddy, in an interview with WWJ Newsradio 950's Ryan Wrecker. "Just because the uncertainty about stations potentially raising prices here later this week."
De Hann said he doesn't expect to see a decrease in gas prices, in Metro Detroit or nationally, between now and the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
"I know most of them, I can see the margins are razor thin, and that brings in the uncertainty," De Haan said. "Absolutely, I would fill up with some of these low prices. There is a risk they could go up, and there's not much risk they could go down much more than this."
The average price in Michigan on Tuesday was is $3.08 a gallon for regular gas, although you can find it much cheaper in many places.
Tuesday afternoon, Gas Buddy reported the best deal around (without a Costco or Sam's Club membership) was $2.65 a gallon at the BP at 13603 W. Chicago in Detroit. It was also $2.26 for cash customers at the Shell station on Telegraph Rd. in Flat Rock. In Royal Oak, the price was $2.67 for those paying cash at the Citgo at 28992 Woodward Ave. (See more here).
