Governor Whitmer calls for $300 weekly bonus for workers returning to job

TROY (WWJ) -- Governor Whitmer is working with lawmakers to expand a program that will incentivize Michiganders to return to the workforce.

WWJ's Sandra McNeil reports that the governor's plan to give workers an additional $300 a week, on top of wages already earned.

The bonus would offset the federal unemployment money that workers would lose  once they return to the workforce.

"We're using this as a bridge to get back into full employment," Whitmer said. "[You can] continue to draw down this $300 a month on top of your paycheck. That's a great way for working people to get back in without paying a price or having to make an unconscionable decision - 'Do I stay out and make a little more, or do I jump back in and get the benefit of both?' And that's what we're working on."

Workers who are currently laid off will be eligible to receive the bonus through September 4. The governor is also looking to expand the program to businesses who are looking to hire new employees, as well as returning workers.

Whitmer made the announcement on Monday during a press conference where she also discussed a proposal to invest more than $1 billion in federal child care funding.
