GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) - Officials for the Grand Rapids Griffins said the actions of a few fans attending Friday night's match up against the Cleveland Monsters came at a steep price.
The organization took to their social media platforms on Facebook and X to express their extreme disappointment at nine fans who they say cost the Griffins their victory during a pivotal moment in the game.
The team's management said nine fans “had purchased foam pucks as part of our long-running throw for dough charitable fundraiser but chose to throw them onto the ice after our game-tying goal, resulting in a delay-of-game penalty to Grand Rapids.”
The actions marred a memorable comeback against Cleveland, the organization added, and erased the team's momentum.
The Monsters managed to net a goal during the power play in overtime, costing the Griffins a second point in their standings and a three-game winning streak on home ice.
“We’re proud of our team’s resilient effort and the support of our loyal fans, we can’t say the same about these nine individuals — out of a crowd of nearly 6,000 — who caused this unprecedented situation,” the team went on to say.
Several of the fans were immediately ejected from Van Andel Arena while the "owners" of the other pucks thrown were identified.
The Griffins vowed to address the issue to prevent future incidents from occurring.
"The organization is actively looking at all possible changes for this promotion to ensure that this activity does not happen at a future game.”
Goaltender Sebastian Cossa, who was drafted 15th overall by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, said in a post-game interview that the penalty was "tough."
"You know, a lot of highs and lows," Cossa added. "I'm really happy with the guys, they were resilient tonight, battling back... secured the point, Obviously, a tough one to lose in overtime."
The Grand Rapids Griffins play in the American Hockey League (AHL) and are the affiliate to the Detroit Red Wings. The team won the Calder Cup in 2013 and 2017.
