Grand Rapids man who threw handgun out the window during traffic stop also found with drugs, AR-15 style-rifle: MSP

IONIA COUNTY (WWJ) - A Grand Rapids man is behind bars after he attempted to ditch a handgun out of his window during a traffic stop in West Michigan -- but was found in possession of additional weapons and numerous narcotics, troopers said.

According to Michigan State Police, a Lakeview Post trooper out in Ionia County stopped a driver for speeding on December 30th -- but ended up arresting the man, identified as a 28-year-old Grand Rapids resident, for having firearms and drugs in his vehicle.

And the driver apparently tried to get rid of one of the weapons, MSP added, by throwing it out of the window when the trooper pulled the man over.

"The trooper found methamphetamine, cocaine, a scale, additional narcotics, and an AR style rifle inside of the vehicle. A 9mm handgun was thrown from the vehicle as the trooper was initiating the traffic stop, but was safely recovered and secured," state police said of the incident.

The driver was taken into custody and lodged at the Ionia County jail for multiple offenses, including possession with intent to deliver, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearms, parole violations, and an outstanding warrant.

No other details were provided.
