CLAM LAKE TWP. (WWJ) – An elderly Grosse Pointe Park man has been charged in a Labor Day weekend crash Up North that sent him and his wife to the hospital.
Thomas McCormick, 75, was arraigned Wednesday in Wexford County’s 84th District Court on one count of operating while license suspended, revoked or denied causing serious injury. He was also charged with one count of moving violation causing serious impairment of a body function.
The charges stem from a crash on Sept. 3, 2022, just south of Cadillac.
The crash was caught on dash cam by a Michigan State Police Cadillac Post trooper who was working a traffic detail on M-115.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. that Saturday on M-115 near 48 Road in Clam Lake Township. Officials say McCormick’s 2019 Chrysler Pacifica veered off the road into oncoming traffic and struck a tree on the opposite side of the road.
He and his 75-year-old wife were taken to Munson Hospital in Cadillac. The wife was later sent to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City due to the extent of her injuries. Her condition now was not disclosed.
No other injuries were reported.
The crash investigation led to an arrest warrant being issued for McCormick on March 17, 2023.
He turned himself in at the Wexford County Jail on Wednesday. His next court date is scheduled April 18.
Authorities have not said why McCormick didn’t have a valid license at the time of the crash.
