(WWJ) Southfield police need the public's help to find a man who got into a gunfight with a homeowner after trying to rob him.
The victim had just arrived at his home on Constitution Street, at Lasher and 11 Mile Rd., at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, when an armed man wearing a ski mask approached.
The suspect demanded money before entering the house and firing several shots.
The homeowner returned fire, police said, and the suspect fled the scene on foot.
Lt. Shane Russell told WWJ that investigators do not believe that the homeowner was specifically targeted.
There are no known suspects at this time.
"The Southfield citizen, or the homeowner I should say, upstanding citizen has been cooperative, you know, doesn't believe that anyone has an issue with him that would have led to the incident," Russell said. "So, definitely, at this point we have a little bit of a dead end in the investigation."
The homeowner was not injured, and police do not believe that the suspect was either.
Anyone with information that could help with the investigation is asked to call Southfield Police at 248-796-5500. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP.
