
YPSILANTI TWP (WWJ) -- A man who opened fire on a car with two people inside before barricading inside a Washtenaw County apartment complex has died from what police believe to be a suicide.
A police officer for Ypsilanti Township, Derick Jackson, confirmed with WWJ Newsradio 950 that officials discovered the body of the 37-year-old suspect around noon on Thursday.
The unidentified man had cut off communication with officers several hours ago, and that's when Jackson believes the suspect decided to take his own life.
Officials from the Washtenaw County Sherriff's Office said the barricade situation remained ongoing at the 1600 block of Laurel Bay Drive in Ypsilanti Township — in the Laurel Bay Apartments off Grove Rd. — Thursday morning as crisis negotiations tried to bring the incident to a peaceful close.
The WCSO said dispatch first received reports of shots fired in the area around 9 p.m. Wednesday night. An intitial investigation revealed the 37-year-old suspect became upset as his girlfriend was moving out of the apartment. The girlfriend and her friend went to leave in a vehicle when the suspect produced a weapon and open fired, deputies confirmed.
WCSO said none of the victims were hurt in the shooting.
When deputies with the sheriff's office arrived on scene, the suspect went back into his apartment; he remained there throughout the night as crisis negotiators worked towards a peaceful resolution.
Deputies said residents within Laurel Bay Apartments were evacuated as a large police presence was surrounding the complex.
No other information was made available and the investigation remains ongoing.
