HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) – You won't see them, but officers from the Hamtramck Police Department will be looking for litterbugs next week.

Starting Monday, August 18th, there will be a renewed police enforcement at Veterans Park on Joseph Campau Ave, which is the city's largest park.

Officers in plain clothes will write tickets to those who litter. According to the city, fines associated with those tickets can cost up to $500

The Hamtramck Parks Conservancy said the effort comes amid an increase in littering.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, Executive Director Thomas Habitz said, "The city has been picking up hundreds of pieces of litter on a daily basis, so it's been draining the city of resources."

The city put up anti-littering signs at Veterans Park. Officials have also been working on anti-littering campaigns and providing educational resources to residents.

"We hope that by getting education out there about what is taking place, we'll be able to get in front of that, and tickets won't have to be issued," said Habitz.

The city did not say how long they will have increased enforcement in the park.
