HARPER WOODS (WWJ) -- A ten-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday with life-threatening injuries after finding a firearm at home and accidentally shooting himself.
Harper Woods Director of Public Safety Jason M. Hammerle confirmed Monday that the child was fighting for his life after suffering what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The boy was being supervised by an older sibling when he got ahold of the firearm.
It is not currently known where the gun was prior to the shooting or who the weapon belongs to.
"Very sad situation," said Director Hammerle, "but we are hopeful this young man will pull through."
This is the second reported instance of a child sustaining an accidental gunshot wound after finding a gun. A 5-year-old boy shot himself in the hand on Saturday.
