DETROIT (WWJ) -- A little over a year after a 4-year-old boy died from fentanyl, his mother turned herself into police for giving him the narcotics.
Chavon Caprice Boone, 40, of Detroit, has been charged with felony murder, first-degree child abuse and delivery of a narcotic causing death in connection with the fatal incident.
Prosecutors allege that Boone was alone in her child's bedroom in their home in the 18540 block of Fitzgerald Court, on April 10, 2022, when Anthony Scott Upshaw, Jr., 4, went into cardiac arrest.
Boone screamed, waking up the boy's father, who went up to the bedroom, found Anthony unresponsive and began giving him chest compressions.
First responders arrived and took Anthony to a local hospital, where he was treated, but did not survive.
The medical examiner found fentanyl in the child's system. At the time, though, it could not be determined how the narcotics got there.
One year and one month later, Boone called 911 and was taken to the Detroit Police Homicide Section, where she told them she murdered her son and was arrested.
It is believed the defendant was alone in the bedroom when she gave her son the drugs that caused him to go into cardiac arrest and die. Officials indicate that more evidence will be provided in court during the preliminary examination on June 7, to support this claim.
"There was an unexpected turn of events that brought to us to these charges," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a Monday press release.
"Everyone deserves not to be forgotten. This child is no longer a cold case statistic, we will bring justice to Anthony and his family."
Boone was arraigned and remanded to jail Sunday. She is next expected in court for a probable cause hearing on May 31.
