HARPER WOOD (WWJ) - An investigation is underway in Harper Woods after nearly a dozen middle school students allegedly ate edibles at school.
The Harper Woods Public Safety Department said the incident occurred on Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Discovery Creative Pathways K-8 charter school, located on Harper Ave. north of Moross Road.
A classmate allegedly brought the gummies to school and handed them out to ten students between the ages of 12 and 15.
Director of Public Safety Jason Hammerle said in a statement: "A student was distributing marijuana edibles to some classmates, and they became ill, which I interpreted as intoxicated. Our detectives interviewed the distributor and a parent, but unsure on charges until it is sent to the Wayne County Prosecutors Office for review. I cannot speak to what action the school may take against the student."
One of the affected students was taken to the hospital for evaluation as requested by their guardian, Hammerle added, while the other students were picked up by their parents.
Phalen Leadership Academies, which runs Discovery Creative Pathways, released a statement to WDIV in response to the incident:
"There was an isolated incident regarding unauthorized items or behaviors exhibited by a couple of middle school students today, Thursday, Feb. 22. Administration is working to further assess and address this incident. As this is an open investigation, we are not at liberty to share any other details. If it is determined that scholars were involved in the incident, they will be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to Discovery Creative Pathways Harper Woods Student Handbook and/or board policy.
As with any case of unauthorized items or behaviors that are outside of the standard of excellence for our students, we work to ensure corrective action is taken. We always keep scholar safety at the forefront of what we do. Harper Woods is dedicated to ensuring our school is and remains an open, nurturing environment that promotes scholar growth and opportunity."
