HARPER WOODS (WWJ) – A teenager accused of fatally shooting his mother and her boyfriend during a barricaded situation Friday afternoon in Harper Woods is facing two counts of first-degree murder.

Harper Woods police officials say 19-year-old Demond Thomas Burgen, Jr. was arraigned Sunday on the murder charges, as well as two counts of felony firearm.

Burgen is accused of killing his 45-year-old mother, Khalilah Elam and her 52-year-old boyfriend, Reginald Farmer.

His bond was set at $1 million.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says around 1 p.m. Friday Burgen shot Elam and Farmer multiple times.

Harper Woods police officers were called to the scene and set up a perimeter around the home. Officers entered and found the victims in the upstairs bedroom suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Farmer was pronounced dead at the scene and Elam was pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital.

Officers found Burgen hiding in the basement of the home with a handgun against his head. After negotiations, Burgen was taken into custody at the scene.

Burgen was led out of the home by police. WWJ’s Ryan Marshall reported Friday that Burgen was visibly laughing and he reportedly spat in an officer’s face.

There’s been no word on a possible motive in the shooting.

A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 14 and a preliminary exam on Sept. 21.
