ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- There were no serious injuries, but there was a big mess and long delays for drivers near Ann Arbor, after a semi truck overturned overnight.
The crash happened just after 12 a.m. Thursday, along westbound I-94 at Jackson Road.
Officials said the tractor-trailer was carrying a variety of hazardous materials when it hit the median wall, sending significant concrete debris into the eastbound lanes of I-94, resulting in several secondary crashes.
According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, the big concern involved a 55-gallon drum containing 38% nitric acid. It completely ruptured,. spilling onto the shoulder of the freeway.
A HAZMAT team responded and used sodium bicarbonate, like baking soda, to safely neutralize the acid.
