DETROT (WWJ) -- Yes, we're in the home stretch of summer. And it will certainly feel like it on Thursday: the hottest day of the week in Metro Detroit.

A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service, in effect for all of Southeast Michigan from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on July 24.

The forecasted highs will be in the mid-90s in Detroit and the suburbs, while NWS says index values up to 101 are expected.

It's going to be quite humid, too, which won't help matters much.

To keep yourself and your family safe, the following actions are advised:

- Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

- To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

- Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

- Check with local emergency management officials for information on cooling center availability.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson says the good news is this is only really going to last one day.

"At least, the really high heat," he said, speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950. "The humidity, though, is going to stick around a little longer."

On Thursday, Thomson said: "We'll have sunshine mixed in with clouds; a very hot and humid afternoon: a high up to 96, and AccuWeather real-feel temperatures will be over 100 degrees at times in the afternoon, with the high humidity."

Thompson said it will stay warm and sticky overnight Thursday with some clouds, and a shower or two. There could even be a heavier thunderstorm that could produce damaging winds.

At this point, NWS said there's only a "marginal risk" for severe weather in Southeast Michigan on Thursday, but they're keeping an eye on it.

At this point, it looks like the rain will arrive sometime late this afternoon, with a chance for severe weather continuing into the night.

Looking ahead, it won't be as hot on Friday and into the weekend. But clouds will limit the sunshine.

Thompson said it will remain quite humid on Friday and Saturday, with showers and a couple of thunderstorms possible each day.

Highs will be in the low to mid-80s Friday and Saturday, and a little warmer on Sunday when the high will reach around 87 degrees. There's a change for another thunderstorm early Sunday, before things are expected to dry up.
