BELLEVILLE (WWJ) - A shooting suspect prompted a manhunt in Wayne County early Friday morning after two people were shot in a reported car jacking.
WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene in a 7:30 a.m. update where investigators and crime scene technicians littered Main Street in downtown Belleville, near Egan's Pub, with evidence markers.
"That noise you hear behind me is a fire truck with its lights on to help with the investigation on Main Street," Campbell reported. "It is covered, littered with evidence markers. So many in fact that they've used the alphabet and numbers. I saw up to 'W' and '36' -- I'm not sure if that's an indication of two different types of weapons or just so many pieces of evidence, perhaps shell casings, that they had to use both markers."
While details about the case remain unclear at this time, Campbell said the incident began when two victims, a man and a woman, were reportedly shot during or after a carjacking sometime overnight.
"There's a car that has smashed into a building and it's a Dodge Charger, can't quite see, but both passenger doors are splayed open and it looks like clothing, articles of clothing, shoes out on the road," Campbell said.
Around 11 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, police spotted a vehicle driving erratically heading east on I-94 toward Inkster. Officers began pursuing the driver, who was reportedly in a stolen vehicle, in a high-speed chase.
The driver ended up wrecking the vehicle and ran off in an Inkster neighborhood, Campbell added, prompting a manhunt.
Police eventually found the perpetrator and learned they were wanted in connection to the double shooting that happened earlier in Belleville.
"[The victims] were being helped by patrons in the street," Campbell said. "They're in the hospital, the man I believe is in critical but stable condition. The woman is in stable condition -- might be the other way -- but they're both at least doing better than earlier."
"Not sure exactly what started," Campbell continued. "This may have been just the car theft, may have been associated with a robbery -- still working to get information on that."
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing with Michigan State police, Belleville police and Van Buren Township police all involved with processing the scene.
"A lot of bullets, a lot of shots fired in this case," Campbell added.
Campbell said Main Street through downtown Belleville is closed with drivers urged to seek an alternate route.
No other details were provided.
