(WWJ) No matter who wins the Michigan-Ohio State game next weekend, the real winner will be people in need.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan and United Way of Central Ohio have launched a fundraising battle — putting bragging rights on the line ahead of this year's big game.

Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Luke Sloan, Director Kevin Gregory explained what "United Rivals" is all about.

"We have a little bit of fun on social media, on our Facebook and Instagram pages, going back and forth on who's ahead, who's in the lead, and what's happening on the field at the same time," Gregory said. "It's just a really energetic new way to engage a different audience for us, using the college football rivalry as a way to engage community members, and just really make everything better for the community in those two regions."

As for who these funds will help, Gregory said United Rivals aims to support those who are most in need.

"ALICE households are asset limited/income constrained, but employed," he said. "If you think of these people who are working, but they could be one paycheck away from crisis, right? So, United Way for Southeastern Michigan really helps these families, try to lift them out of crisis, into stability, and then from stability to prosperity."

As of last check on Monday, the Buckeyes were lead the Wolverines with $27,000 to about $6,500 for Michigan. (Make a donation on the Michigan side, and don't let Ohio win!)

Those who donate $50 or more will get a limited edition United Rivals t-shirt.

Fans can check the latest totals and make a donation through Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, at UnitedRivals.org.
