DETROIT (WWJ) -- A years-long battle between HGTV’s Nicole Curtis and the Detroit Land Bank Authority has come to an end.
On Thursday, Wayne Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Kenny ruled in the “Rehab Addict Rescue” star’s favor, stating that Curtis and her renovation group had legally obtained the title to the property.
Curtis, a Lake Orion-native, purchased the dilapidated home on East Grand Boulevard from a private owner in 2017 for $17,000.
She claims she then put around $60,000 worth of renovations into the 2,600-square-foot house, at which point the Land Bank said they controlled the property, having acquired it when the previous owners let it fall into disrepair.
However, the Land Bank apparently didn't claim the title for the home until a year after Curtis' Detroit Renovations LLC firm recorded its deed.
According to the Detroit News, Judge Kenny stated that the blighted house "poses a nuisance and a danger to the health, safety and welfare of the community," and ordered as part of the ruling that Curtis reduce that risk by completing the renovations.
She reportedly plans to put another $500,000 worth of work into the Islandview property.
"Our goal for this property has always been to see it renovated and returned to productive use," Curtis' attorney Alyssa Strickland told the Detroit News. "We will be pleased to see the house rehabilitated to the benefit of its Islandview neighbors."
