A high school senior was hit by a car and killed while running on I-94 this weekend.

Police say Shaun Happy, 18, of Chelsea, died Saturday night after he was hit by a Jeep on westbound I-94 near Sergeant Road in Leoni Township. That's near Jackson.

Many questions remain including what caused the teen to start running on the freeway, whether he had a car nearby, and if he was alone.

The incident remains under investigation, police say, with results pending from a toxicology test.

Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety Director Mike Jester told MLive the driver of the Jeep, a 37-year-old Rochester Hills man, was unininjured.

Jester added it’s not clear why Happy was on the freeway but there's no question that he was “running down the road ...” Happy is listed on a website as a cross-country runner for the Chelsea Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, the Chelsea School District sent a message to parents and a moment of silence was held on Monday for Happy. A crisis team and counseling is available for students.

“I speak for all of the Chelsea High School staff in saying that we very much appreciate your support during these difficult times,” Principal Mike Kapolka said in a message to parents. “Please continue to keep the Happy family in your thoughts and prayers.”
