CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police are searching for a driver that fled after hitting a 7-year-old girl as she crossed the road in Chesterfield Township on Thursday evening.
According to the Chesterfield Township Police Department, the young girl was with her older sister attempting to cross the street on Gratiot just north of 23 Mile Rd. when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The driver did not stop and continued traveling north of Gratiot Ave.
The 7-year-old sustained significant injuries, officers said in a release. First responders treated her at the scene before she was taken to a local hospital.
She is listed in critical, but stable condition.
At this time, Chesterfield Township Police Crash Investigators and the Detective Bureau are continuing to investigate the hit-and-run crash. The identity of the driver involved is currently unknown, but police are turning to the public for help in finding the car — and hopefully the driver.
"The initial crash investigation shows the suspect vehicle to possibly be a white or black 2020 to 2022 Kia Optima sedan and should have light damage to the front of the vehicle," officials said.
