CANTON (WWJ) - A hospitalized patient involved in a pedestrian crash on Friday night was arrested after police identified him as a shooting suspect who allegedly killed a 19-year-old woman at a Canton hotel.
The Canton Police Department said in a press release that officers were called out to the Comfort Suites located on 5730 N Haggerty Road, near Ford Road just off I-275, after a woman was shot at around 9:23 p.m. on February 16.
When they arrived, they found a 19-year-old woman who had been "tragically killed in an incident involving gunfire."
The victims' identity has been withheld as police work on notifying her family members.
As police investigated, they tracked down a male suspect who was arrested at a nearby hospital as he was receiving treatment for injuries stemming from a "pedestrian accident."
They reiterated that there is no known threat to the public.
"The Canton Police Department extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time," the department stated.
The circumstances surrounding the homicide remain under investigation at this time.
On the same night, not an hour after the alleged shooting, Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched to the scene of a pedestrian crash involving a 23-year-old Wayne man who was struck twice by passing cars as he ran across the southbound I-275 exit to Ford Road.
The crash occurred a few hundred feet away from the Comfort Sites in Canton with troopers adding that the man was running from a "previous incident."
According to their preliminary investigation, the man was crossing the freeway when he was clipped by the mirror of a passenger car. He was then struck again by another passing vehicle.
The first driver stopped at the scene while the second vehicle continued driving.
The 23-year-old man was taken to a local hospital where he was said to be in critical condition.
MSP's traffic crash reconstruction section is continuing to investigate the freeway incident.
When contacted by WWJ, Canton police did not confirm if the pedestrian crash victim and the homicide suspect were the same person, but they did state that they expect to release more details regarding their shooting investigation as soon as it becomes available.
